Chironomus mongoldecus Sasa & Suzuki 1997

Adult
Males:
Body length 8.52 (7.28-11.12) mm; wing length 3.86 (3.38-4.81) mm, both highly variable; WW/WL 0.28 (0.27-0.29), R-M area dark; AR 4.35 (3.98-4.75); VR 1.05 (1.03-1.07) or 0.95 (0.93-0.97).
Frontal tubules prominent, 38 x 11 µm, i.e. twice as long as wide.  Eyes bare, ER 0.23 (0.13-0.29); palp relatively short.
Ground color of scutum and scutellum yellow, stripes brown, postnotum dark brown, leg segments almost uniformly yellowish-brown.  Abdominal tergites II-VIII each with a large central brown oval area with yellow zones along the lateral and posterior margins (Fig. 4b).
Frontal tubules widest at about middle and spindle-shaped, 22 x 12 µm.  ER of eyes 0.09-0.29.  AR 4.08 (3.48-5.00).
Wings bare, membrane slightly bluish, crossvein darkly pigmented, VR 1.03 (1.01-1.034).
Thoracic setae: 22.5 (17-28) acrostichal; 34.6 (26-51) dorsocentral; 7.1 (6-8) prealar; 33.3 (18-46) scutellar, all highly variable.
Leg ratios: fLR 1.44 (1.32-1.49); mLR 0.60 (0.56-0.62); hLR 0.74 (0.70-0.77); BR highly variable 3.1 (1.9-5.0) (i.e. only some specimens have a tarsal beard). Superior Volsella of the E-type of Strenzke (1959); anal point stout, widest at base; Inferior Volsella long, straight, widest at base and tapering towards rounded apex; gonostylus moderately swollen and narrowing markedly over posterior third.

TIX shown with 9 medial setae, apparently in a single pale spot.  Superior volsella long, darkly pigmented closest of the E(g)-type of Strenzke (1959)
Anal point relatively short, narrow and constricted at base; gonostylus smoothly rounded and not constricted near apex.

Female: Not known

Pupa, Larva and Cytology: Not known.

Found:    Mongolia - (Type locality) Karakorum.
