C. palpalis Johannsen 1932

Sublette and Sublette (1973) listed this as a species of Chironomus.

Adult

Johannsen's 1937 description of adults:

Male:
Yellowish species or perhaps greenish in life; Length 3.5 mm.
Head lacking frontal tubercles; palpi broken off; AR over 3.5; LR about 1.7.
Thoracic vittae ferruginous.  Abdominal segments with transverse brown fascia, final two segments almost wholly pale brown, hypopygium yellowish.
Wing hyaline, crossvein not darkened.
Genitalia briefly described as: Superior volsella short and stout (illustrated as S-type of Strenzke (1959), barely reaching the base of the long, relatively narrow gonostyle which has 4 stiff setae near tip.  Anal point (as spur of ninth segment) with slightly expanded tip, produced beyond the end of the inferior volsella, which is rounded and enlarged at the end with simple recurved setae.
Female:
Only briefly mentioned in original description as having a six segmented antenna with intermediate segments flask-shaped, with necks as long as the bulbous part.  Crossvein of wing slightly darkened.

Immatures described by Lenz (1937) from material collected by Johannsen.

Pupa:  Integument moderately pale, length about 7-8 mm.    Caudolateral spur of segment VIII with only a single spine (see figure above).

Fourth instar larva: a small to medium sized plumosus-type larva, about 13 mm long; long ventral tubules and long lateral tubule on segment 10; very long anal tubules (see figure above).

Found: SUMATRA Type locality - Tjurup and L. Ranua, Sumatra.

Larva collected from water in a hollow bamboo stump, and a male and female reared from larvae collected at 45 m in Lake Ranua.
