Description of holotype of Chironomus pseudoppositus (in prep)

Holotype adult male:
(designated in an unpublished Ph.D. Thesis by J. Martin at The University of Melbourne, 1966): AN.2 Male 4.
Head, antennae and mouth parts brown, AR 2.51; frontal tubercles uneven 10 & 14 µm, 1.1-1.4 times longer than wide.  21 clypeal setae; palpal proportions (micron) 54 : 65 : 210 : 225 : 385; P5/P4 1.71, P5/P3 1.1.83.
Thorax generally brown with purplish brown stripes; thorax pruinose. Acrostichal setae unclear, 17-18 dorsolaterals, 5-6 prealars, 1 supraalar, scutellum with 12 larger setae in a posterior row and 5 smaller setae in an anterior row. Legs yellowish green, unbanded.

Wings with anterior veins hardly darker than posterior, crossvein slightly darkened; length 3.26 mm, width 0.68 mm., VR 0.96; 3 SCf on brachiolum.
Abdomen generally black with a white posterior margin on segments II-VII, segments VIII and IX dark.

16 setae in middle of TIX, 6+1 setae at tip of gonostylus, which is moderately swollen near the middle and reduces relatively quickly over posterior half.
Hypopygium (above) similar to those of other members of the C. oppositus group. Superior volsella (above) of the Strenzke':s D(d-e)-type but with some development of a beak.  IVo reaching almost to end of anal point, recurved setae simple.  Anal point narrower at base.
