Species Chironomus calligraphus Ty. 3.

A further member of the callgraphus-group (noted as "calligraphus Ty. 3") is known from La Plata, Beunos Airies Prov., Argentina.

No data in BOLD database or Gene Bank.

Adult and Pupa - not known.

Fourth instar larva: Gross measurements not known.  Gula very slightly dark on posterior third, widest at base where wider than the mentum; Salivary reservoir about 88 x 22.5 µm (i.e. about 3.9 times longer than deep.
Mentum (a, below) of type II, with central teeth of type IB; width about 188 µm, with reduced 4th lateral (type II). Width central c1 tooth 17.5 µm, distance between c2 teeth 27.5 mm, width central trifid tooth 42.5 µm, distance between 1st laterals 63 µm.
Ventromental plates (b, below) separated by about 35% of the mentum width; about 215 µm wide and 4 times wider than deep; longer 1.15 times the width of the mentum; with about 52-54 striae; VMR about 0.25.
PE (c, below) with about 14 teeth (type A).
Distance between the antennal bases smaller than the distance between the S4 setae, which are separated by about 91% of the frontoclypeal width at that point.
Antenna (d, below) with basal segment, about 3.5 times longer than wide; segment lengths (micron): 126 : 29 : 6 : 12.5 : 5 (A5/A3 0.8); AR about 2.27; A2/A1 about 0.23.
Mandible with 3rd inner tooth relatively well developed but only partly colored (type IIIB); only 8 furrows visible on the outer surface near the base; 12-13 taeniae in Pecten mandibularis; MTR abt. 0.38.

Larval mouthparts of C. calligraphus Ty. 3.

CytologyOnly some poor photographs are available, but show it belongs to the pseuothummi cytocomplex AE, BF, CD, G, with nucleoli in arms C and G.  Nucleoli in arms C, about 1/4 from distal end, and another near the centromere of arm G.  No inversion polymorphism in available specimens.
Arm G relatively long, closely paired with a nucleolus about 10 bands from the centromere, a Balbiani ring about 2/3 from centromere and another a few bands from the distal end.
